Greg Broderick

(IRE) Internationell hoppryttare

Greg Broderick is an Irish showjumper based in Co Tipperary. Greg’s father was a racehorse trainer so Greg grew up surrounded by horses. He started riding at a very young age and enjoyed hunting and going to pony clubs.

Greg was 16-years-old when he started competing on the national showjumping circuit. He competed at the Dublin Horse Show for the first time a year later and won the Young Rider Class.

It wasn’t long before Greg showed huge potential in showjumping arenas across the country. He went on to represent Ireland at the European Championships Athens in 2006. Greg has certainly established himself as one of the top showjumpers in Ireland.

Greg and his family run a showjumping performance and breeding business at Ballypatrick Stables in Thurles. Greg is heavily involved in the business producing horses for sale. He also trains young riders and horses.

Broderick has enjoyed numerous successes at the RDS Dublin Horse Show over the past few years and 2014 was no exception. He won the 4, 5 and 6 year old Horse Sport Ireland Young Horse classes and this remarkable achievement was combined with many placings during the week. 2014 was rounded off by Greg Broderick being crowned the Showjumping Ireland National Champion 2014 after winning the overall title of the Horseware/TRM Premier Series with MHS Going Global taking the Leading Horse title.

In July 2015 Greg, on a wild card entry, competed in his first ever Global Champions Tour in Cascais, Portugal with MHS Going Global. Broderick maintaining a cool head aboard Caledonia Stables’s nine year-old Kilkenny-bred gelding delivered a perfect clear round in his first appearance at a Global Champions Tour event, placing third on time behind Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Alsharbatly and winner Scott Brash. An incredible achievement for the rider and the team at Ballypatrick Stables.

In 2016 Greg and the Irish-bred MHS Going Global were selected to fly the flag at the Olympic Games in Brazil, after which MHS Going Global was sold to Greece.

Leading International Rider at the 2017 Dublin Horse Show and the 2018 TRM/Horseware National Champion, Greg is currently producing a string of some 60 young horses at Ballypatrick Stables, among them multiple Grand Pix winners Chinook II and Charmeur.

“By using TRM products as part of our weekly routine, I find that the horses are in good condition throughout the long jumping season. GNF, Ironxcell and Stride are my products of choice.”

DID YOU KNOW: Greg has a keen interest in horseracing and has trained Point-to-Point winners in the past.

60 seconds with Greg Broderick…

How old were you when you first sat on a pony/horse?
As far back as I can remember though it wasn’t until later in life I found a love for showjumping as hunting and hunt chasing were my interests in my early days.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
There were plenty along the way but when I started showjumping, Shane Breen was the person that thought me a lot.

If you weren’t a showjumper, what you be?
It would have to be with horses and I suppose if I couldn’t ride I’d like to be a dealer because I get great satisfaction from selling horses.

What is the first thing you look for in a horse?
A nice model.

What advice would you give to a young rider?
To work hard, set achievable goals and work towards them.

You have had an incredible season so far this year, including winning the 4,5 & 6 year old Horse Sport Ireland Young Horse classes in the RDS. Is there another show that you dream about a big win at?
I’ve been very lucky to have won a lot with young horses and at national Grand Prix level but my main goal is the Aga Khan and hopefully I’ll get a good start with Going Global as we make our Nations Cup debut in Arezzo in two weeks time. Since I’ve started showjumping ,all I’ve wanted is to be part of the Irish Team on the Friday of Dublin.

The team at Ballypatrick Stables must be incredibly busy with the breeding stock, young horse prep and preparing your horses for competition. What do you think is the key to such a successful business?
The key is a very good team and I’m lucky to have a very good one. There is only so much any one person can do and I’m very lucky to have great people around me.
